Ctrl-Shift: Personal Data and Mental Wellbeing

Ctrl-Shift is a business innovation consultancy, specialising in the strategic value of trusted personal data. They were commissioned to investigate personal data mobility study into the relationship between data-driven insights and improved mental wellbeing. The study was developed as part of their sector-leading Sandbox programme alongside Public Health England, Facebook, HSBC and mental health charity, Togetherall. It considered how data-driven insights can create digital tools in the hands of individuals to enable them to track and support their mental health. Given the diverse range of partners involved they were looking for a partner who could harness the collective intelligence of all of the participants and navigate all of the complex challenges involved in this ground breaking programme of work.

What we did

We worked closely with the Ctrl-Shift team, together with participation specialists IOVIA, as well as with all of the sandbox partners to successfully navigate the variety of technical, commercial, social and ethical issues around the development of a personal-data powered mental wellbeing service. In practice this meant hosting and facilitating a wide range of collaborative sessions, using best practice design and innovation tools and techniques, to understand the specific needs of all of the stakeholders and to translate and synthesize into a meaningful way. As a result we developed a minimum viable service called WellApp and identified gaps in five main areas which, when fulfilled, would not only unleash the value of the service but which have the potential to unlock much wider value throughout a data-driven economy.
